Apple Fires Back At Motorola Sues Over Multi-touch Patent

Today Apple fires back at Motorola. If you remember last moth Motorola sued Apple claiming Apple violated some 26 patents relating to most thing on the iPhone including antenna, app store, mobile me etc etc.

Well Apple decided to fire back at Motorola filing two patent infringement suit covering six patents all related to multi-touch.

This is just the latest lawsuit filed in the mobile space in the last couple of moths. See our article "Mobile Space Market Who IS Suing Who?"

This suit was more than expected as tech companies usually fire back at lawsuits brought to them by counter suing.

What is interesting is that by Apple filing this lawsuit is effectively suing the two largest handset makers that uses Android HTC and Motorola.

At some point Google will have to step-up and in some way defend or indemnify its partners or risk loosing its Android momentum as manufactures move to less liable OS like Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

The Patents In questions Are:

  • 7,812,828, Ellipse Fitting for Multi-Touch Surfaces
  • 7,663,607, Multipoint Touchscreen
  • 5,379,430, Object-Oriented System Locator System
  • 7,497,949, Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Determining Commands by Applying Heuristics
  • 6,493,002, Method and Apparatus for Displaying and Accessing Control and Status Information in a Computer System
  • 5,838,315, Support for Custom User-Interaction Elements in a Graphical, Event-Driven Computer System
