Why You Hate to Run for Exercise

Omar Morales Running is one of the very best forms of exercise there is. A person who runs at a moderate pace can burn up to 650 calories per hour – enough to work off that extra slice of cheesecake.
On the other hand, not everyone enjoys putting on running shoes and hitting the open road. Why do so many people hate to run and is there anything that can be done to make the experience more pleasant?
You’re Trying to Do too Much too Soon
It’s unrealistic to expect to run any prolonged distance your first time out. Most people try to do too much too soon and quickly become exhausted - and sore.
by Zaphgod (was Ugo Cei)No wonder they hate to run! This inspires them to kick their running shoes to the back of their closet, so they don’t have to feel guilty about not putting them on again.
The best way to get started is to start out walking. Once walking becomes easy, start alternating short periods of jogging with walking – and pick up the intensity as fitness allows.
The key is to gradually challenge yourself as you build up your fitness level. Trying to run a marathon the first time out is a recipe for failure.
You’re Wearing the Wrong Exercise Attire
To successfully run for exercise, you need shoes made for running. Shoes designed for aerobics and walking don’t provide enough support and they increase the risk of injury – not to mention running shoes are infinitely more comfortable.
Take the time to visit a sporting goods store and have someone knowledgeable help you pick a shoe that works with your particular foot. Secondly, dress appropriately for the weather. When you’re running, you quickly become overheated.
The best way to avoid this is to dress in layers, so you can remove layers as needed. It can be very uncomfortable running with too much clothing on. Don’t let yourself to become too hot so you’ll never want to run again.
You’re Not Preparing Yourself Properly
If you plan to run for exercise, make sure you’re mentally and physically ready before you head out the door. Don’t try to run five miles when you haven’t eaten all day.
You’ll tire quickly and a pleasant run will quickly become a drain. Eat a snack of high quality protein and carbs an hour before heading out to run and make sure you’re well hydrated. Don’t forget to take the time to warm up.
Do some gentle stretching exercises and walk for the first ten minutes. Get yourself prepared mentally and physically before picking up the speed.
You Run Alone Too Often
Some people enjoy the solitude of running, but running with a partner or a group provides new challenges and keeps things interesting. Join a local running club and participate in some of their group runs. See if you can find a partner to run with once a week for variety.
You Don’t Vary Your Route
When you run outdoors, vary your route. Try running at different times of the day and in different parts of your neighborhood. When you tire of running in your neighborhood, try trail running a few days a month.
If you hate to run, you may be going about it all wrong. Running is an incredible stress reliever because it stimulates release of feel good hormones called endorphins. Do it the right way and running for exercise can be a rewarding experience.
