Lawsuits In The Mobile Space: Who Is Suing Who Infographic

Last year we publish a chart (here) showing who were suing who in the mobile phone market. Well here we have an updated version thank you to Reuters.

Like you can see the only change from last year has been an increase in the lawsuit and the complexity. Apple still the largest target of incoming lawsuit but also the largest source of outgoing ones.

There is no wonder why so many people are asking for a patent reform as each day more and more patent lawsuit are launched in most cases with over broad claims and the only thing they are causing is a lack of innovation.

Apple Fires Back At Motorola Sues Over Multi-touch Patent

Today Apple fires back at Motorola. If you remember last moth Motorola sued Apple claiming Apple violated some 26 patents relating to most thing on the iPhone including antenna, app store, mobile me etc etc.

Well Apple decided to fire back at Motorola filing two patent infringement suit covering six patents all related to multi-touch.

This is just the latest lawsuit filed in the mobile space in the last couple of moths. See our article "Mobile Space Market Who IS Suing Who?"

This suit was more than expected as tech companies usually fire back at lawsuits brought to them by counter suing.

What is interesting is that by Apple filing this lawsuit is effectively suing the two largest handset makers that uses Android HTC and Motorola.

At some point Google will have to step-up and in some way defend or indemnify its partners or risk loosing its Android momentum as manufactures move to less liable OS like Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

The Patents In questions Are:

  • 7,812,828, Ellipse Fitting for Multi-Touch Surfaces
  • 7,663,607, Multipoint Touchscreen
  • 5,379,430, Object-Oriented System Locator System
  • 7,497,949, Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Determining Commands by Applying Heuristics
  • 6,493,002, Method and Apparatus for Displaying and Accessing Control and Status Information in a Computer System
  • 5,838,315, Support for Custom User-Interaction Elements in a Graphical, Event-Driven Computer System

HTC Aria

The HTC Aria (formerly known as HTC Liberty) packs the same hardware as the HTC HD mini - a 3.2" HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 5MP camera and 3G connectivity in a compact body. It runs on a 600MHz CPU and has 384MB or RAM - which is exactly what its fancier Android sibling - the HTC Legend - has.

Motorola Backflip

Motorola Backflip

The BACKTRACK touchpad at the back of the screen is another nice touch. It does what a front-mounted trackball will do but on the BACKFLIP you scratch the phone’s back instead. Anyway, effectively you have three different ways to interact with the handset: touchscreen, touchpad and a full QWERTY keyboard. Just imagine BACKTRACK on a transparent display – wicked stuff. But who knows maybe that’s where it’s all heading.

Samsung Impression

The Samsung Impression for AT&T is one of the only phones to feature a 3.2 inches AMOLED touchscreen, which displays brilliant colors and graphics without draining battery life. Messaging and emailing is easy with a full, slide-out QWERTY and the intuitive Touchwiz interface. An built-in accelerometer and vibration feedback makes navigating the touchscreen fast and error-free. The Samsung Impression's other features, including a 3-megapixel camera/camcorder, stereo Bluetooth, and MicroSD memory expansion (up to 16GB) allow for a full multimedia experience. With 3G support and an internal GPS, the Samsung Impression is also capable of supporting AT&T Navigator for turn-by-turn directions. The Samsung Impression is a great choice for anyone looking for a full-featured multimedia phone.
